This was our Christmas book this year. We infact forgot to do anything related to the nativity on Christmas eve...it was too busy...not enough room in the inn! But first thing Christmas morning Sam asked the kids why we gave them gifts? and then Why did God give us the gift of his Son? For God so loved the world. And when I read this story again the meaning became so very clear...we must love the Lord as much as this couple loved each other...enough to give up our most precious possessions to show our love. He asked his disciples to do it. He asked the rich young man to do it and he could not...he walked away sadly instead of "leaving his nets straightaway."
The illustrations in this book vividly show the sacrifice of this couple. As Henry says, they seem so foolish...and that is what those who love often seem. The sacrifice is not made so that they may seem wise or prudent...it is made out of love.
