Spencer Kimball was an incredibly visionary prophet. I love the vision of a prophet to see a need for self-reliance in a people. He encouraged home (local) food production. He encouraged children to work with parents in a garden and processing food. I see these two activities as solving many many of our countries numerous problems . If you begin to take time to see what these two activities could do to change our country, the way we live and what we consume as resources you will start to see that the vision of a prophet is not just for the church members but, as all the commandments, would benefit not only individuals but also a people as a whole. Children would learn to work. The television and video games would be replaced by an understanding of biology and an appreciation for the creation of the earth and of our bodies and of the fruitful nature of work in itself. Children don't like to work by nature, but if a parent is along side of them, it makes children learn and almost enjoy the process. They learn to put off what is most wanted in the "moment" for things that may come with time. They learn simple things, like how to laugh while you are working. How to whistle while you pass the time. New vocabulary. The list goes on. I've been amazed at the vision of these simple commandments and how before their time they were given.
